After the attack on his family, Pablo answers Los Pepes with further violence while trying to send Tata, his mother and the children abroad. Germany offers the family a possible escape from the people hunting them. Murphy follows them to the airport, where Colombian and American pressure turns their journey into another means of tightening the pursuit of Pablo himself.
Peña tries to prevent Los Pepes from killing Fernando Duque and his son. Trujillo passes their hiding place to the group, and both are murdered despite Peña's objections. The deaths expose how little control he has over the alliance he helped. CIA officer Bill Stechner also tells him to stop interfering, treating cooperation with the paramilitaries as part of an operation beyond Peña's authority to direct.
German officials refuse the Escobar family entry, and Pablo's calls and threats fail to change the decision. The attorney general asks Gaviria to let them escape the danger, but the president maintains the pressure. Tata and the children return to Colombia, where police take them into protective custody. Furious that his family has become leverage, Pablo orders a large bomb near the presidential palace. The explosion strikes a busy urban area and kills civilians, including children, as his attempt to secure safety produces another public atrocity.
