Flashbacks show Hurley's father, David, leaving after they try to repair an old car together. Years later, a meteor destroys Hurley's chicken restaurant during a television interview, killing reporter Tricia Tanaka and reinforcing his belief that the lottery numbers are cursed. David returns, and Hurley suspects a financial motive. A visit to a supposedly helpful psychic exposes David's attempt to pay for reassurance. Hurley leaves for Australia despite his father's appeal to stay and repair the car.
On the island, Vincent brings Hurley a skeletal arm with keys attached, leading him to an overturned Dharma van. Hurley recruits Jin and the newly returned Sawyer to help. They find a skeleton named Roger and a supply of beer, but cannot start the engine. Charlie, frightened by Desmond's prediction of his death, joins Hurley inside while Sawyer and Jin push the van downhill. Hurley starts it just before a collision, and all four celebrate with a ride.
Kate returns to the beach with Sawyer but soon prepares to rescue Jack. Sayid and Locke join her in the jungle, with Locke carrying directions he found on Eko's stick. Kate seeks Rousseau's help in locating the Others. Rousseau initially refuses involvement, until Kate says she met a young woman named Alex who helped them escape. Suggesting that Alex may be the daughter Rousseau lost, Kate gives her a reason to reconsider assisting the rescue.
