Flashbacks show Kate hiding on an Australian farm under the name Annie. Ray offers her work and a place to stay, then agrees to drive her to the station when she decides to leave. During the journey, she notices a pursuing car and learns that he intends to collect a reward for handing her over. Kate causes their vehicle to crash but stays to rescue Ray, allowing the marshal to catch her instead of escaping.
On the island, the radio party agrees to keep the French transmission secret to avoid frightening the other survivors. Jack and Hurley discover Kate's mugshot while caring for the injured marshal. His condition deteriorates despite Jack's search for antibiotics. Kate asks Jack to end his suffering, but he refuses. The marshal later speaks privately with her, and she explains that the favour she wanted aboard the plane was for Ray to receive his reward.
Sawyer shoots the marshal but misses his heart, worsening the dying man's injuries. Jack finishes the act to end his pain. Elsewhere, Locke finds Vincent with a carved whistle and lets Michael return the dog to Walt, preserving the father's chance to help his son. Kate offers to explain her crime to Jack. He declines to hear it, telling her that the crash gives the survivors an opportunity to leave their pasts behind.
