Pilot

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Flashbacks revisit the flight from Charlie's and Kate's perspectives. Charlie hides in a lavatory to use heroin, then struggles to reach a seat when the aircraft begins breaking apart. Kate is seated beside a U.S. marshal with her wrists handcuffed. A falling bag knocks him unconscious during the turbulence. She takes his keys, frees herself and puts an oxygen mask on him before securing her own, revealing why the abandoned handcuffs belong to her.

On the island, Walt finds the cuffs, and Sawyer accuses Sayid of causing the crash. Jack and Michael break up their fight while Jack continues treating the gravely injured marshal. Sayid repairs the transceiver but needs higher ground to obtain reception. Kate joins him with Charlie, Shannon, Boone and Sawyer. A polar bear charges them during the climb, and Sawyer kills it with a pistol he took from the marshal's belongings.

The gun produces another argument about who was being escorted on the plane, and Kate takes it before the dispute worsens. Back on the beach, the marshal wakes and asks Jack about a woman. On higher ground, Sayid discovers that a French distress message is blocking their signal. Shannon translates its warning that something killed the speaker's companions. Sayid calculates that the message has repeated for roughly sixteen years, leaving the group uncertain whether anyone ever answered it.
