Matt confronts Father Lantom after discovering Maggie is his mother. He is furious that the priest watched him grow up believing he was alone while keeping the truth within reach. Matt leaves the church and trains at his father's gym, arguing with imagined versions of Jack and Fisk about violence, abandonment and the decision to kill. Flashbacks show Maggie's relationship with Jack and the distress after Matt's birth that brought her back to the religious life.
Ray tries to expose Dex to his superiors, only for Hattley to murder investigator Winn with Ray's gun and frame him. The threat forces him into Fisk's service, and Dex reinforces it through Ray's family. Ray discovers how many other agents are controlled and joins a team used to collect criminals and corrupt officials. Fisk offers them protection from federal investigation in exchange for a share of their income, with a killing by the disguised Dex demonstrating what refusal means.
Foggy's campaign gains support, but Theo reveals that their family's business is tied to loans Fisk can use against them. Karen seeks Matt through Maggie, who instead offers her sanctuary at the church. Ray attempts to lure Matt into Fisk's operation, but Matt goes to the hotel rather than the meeting. He finds the hidden surveillance room and hears that Fisk knows where Karen is hiding and has ordered her death, forcing him to choose between confronting Fisk and reaching her.
