Dex leaves the church and returns in his FBI clothes, taking control of the scene with Ray before the police can search it. Matt and Karen hide below, narrowly avoiding discovery while confronting what has brought them there. Karen admits she killed Wesley and tells Matt about the crash that killed Kevin. Their conversation brings the secrets behind her guilt into the open, but does not immediately persuade Matt to abandon his intention to kill Fisk.
Foggy arrives with a legal way out: Karen surrenders to the NYPD rather than the federal agents. Ray helps the transfer proceed despite Dex's anger, giving Brett reason to distrust the FBI operation. Karen is released, and she and Foggy ask Matt to make one more attempt through the courts. They identify Ray as the witness who could expose the corrupted agents and the man directing them. His decision to protect Karen has already made his own family a target.
Ray rushes home to move Seema and Sami, but gunmen arrive before they can leave. Matt joins the defence and helps him fight them off, then reveals his face as a sign of trust. Fisk meanwhile celebrates the reversal of his convictions and prepares for Vanessa's return. His effort to recover the white painting meets a survivor who refuses to surrender a memory of her family. Later, learning Karen escaped prompts Fisk to beat one of his agents to death.
