As Walt turns 51, he swaps his repaired Aztek for almost nothing and leases himself a Chrysler 300 and Walt Jr. a Dodge Challenger. At a Madrigal warehouse, Lydia’s contact is arrested for diverting methylamine. Mike tells her the man will not talk and promises a replacement. Hank is offered the assistant special agent in charge position vacated by Merkert. He takes it, though his pursuit of Heisenberg will pass to another agent. The birthday dinner with the Whites and Schraders is subdued, and Walt reflects that a year has passed since his cancer diagnosis.
After Walt Jr. leaves the table, Skyler walks fully clothed into the pool and sinks beneath the surface. Marie panics; Walt pulls Skyler out and learns she has asked the Schraders to care for the children. Skyler tells Walt she cannot raise them in a home where danger is treated as ordinary. She says she may hurt herself if he brings them back, and he threatens to have her institutionalized. She eventually backs down, but says she can only wait for his cancer to return. At the warehouse, Jesse and Lydia find a tracker on a methylamine barrel. Mike suspects Lydia planted it, but Walt votes to keep her alive rather than lose their supplier. Jesse gives Walt a birthday watch, which Walt shows Skyler as evidence that someone who wanted him dead can change their mind.
