After escaping Tuco, Walt and Jesse have to return to their separate lives without explaining where they have been. Walt puts a cover story into action: he walks naked through a supermarket, then claims at the hospital that he cannot remember the previous days. Doctors find no medical cause and consider a fugue state, so they arrange a psychiatric assessment. Once assured that the conversation is confidential, Walt tells the psychiatrist that he remembers everything and had wanted time away. The hospital eventually releases him. His family accepts the explanation that he became disoriented, though Skyler remains uneasy.
Jesse goes back to his house to clear the basement and get rid of the RV. Hank has tracked Tuco and Hector while searching for Jesse, and DEA agents bring Jesse in after finding evidence that he was at Tuco’s hideout. They question him about the weekend and about Walt. Jesse says he spent the time with Wendy, a prostitute, and she supports the story. The agents bring in Hector to identify Jesse, but Hector refuses to cooperate, leaving them without a witness. They let Jesse go. His parents refuse to help him. Walt later persuades him to keep cooking meth. At the DEA office, Hank receives Tuco’s grill as a grim reminder of the encounter.
