Phillip receives news that Carol, a former girlfriend he has not seen for decades, has died. Her family wants memories for a memorial assembled through a service that lets users enter photographs. He reluctantly accepts the equipment and meets a guide who helps him explore the surviving images. His contributions are difficult to use because he defaced Carol's face after their breakup and has spent years turning their relationship into a story of rejection.
The photographs reopen arguments about her music career and his infidelity while she was working in London. Phillip recalls travelling there to propose, only for Carol to leave the restaurant. The guide supplies information he never considered: Carol was pregnant after an encounter of her own, and the guide has been shaped from the memories of her daughter Kelly. Phillip's drunken anger prevented him from reading a letter that could have explained her silence.
Another photograph reveals the letter lying in his hotel room. He eventually finds it among the belongings he brought home and reads Carol's invitation to see her the following day. She still loved him, but he never went. Listening to a recording of her cello piece helps him recover a clear memory of her face and of watching her play. Phillip attends the funeral, where Kelly performs the music and acknowledges him with a nod. He arrives with a fuller understanding of Carol, though the chance to reconcile belongs to the past.
