Maria takes pride in her work developing food products, but a focus group introduces an unsettling presence from school. Verity arrives with polite questions and soon obtains a job alongside her. Small disagreements begin turning against Maria: a familiar restaurant has a different name, a meeting she never knew about has been scheduled, and colleagues accept explanations that contradict what she remembers. Verity remains calm as Maria becomes increasingly distressed.
The changes reach Maria's home life and then her own body. Footage appears to show her drinking somebody else's almond milk, although she remembers Verity doing it. Her nut allergy should make the accusation impossible, but nobody recognises the condition. After lashing out, Maria follows Verity to a mansion and finds the machinery behind the disruptions. A pendant lets Verity move into realities in which her spoken wishes are true.
Verity explains that she has used the device to punish schoolmates for the humiliation she suffered, including a rumour Maria started about a teacher. Natalie has already died after being driven into despair. When Maria resists, Verity summons police into a reality where Maria appears to be the attacker. Maria grabs an officer's gun, kills Verity and takes the pendant. Using Verity's fingerprint, she gains control of it and removes the immediate consequences. She then reshapes the world for herself, ending with a throne and the title of empress.
