Jack Bauer blames himself for failing to save Omar Hassan, despite President Taylor's assurance that the death was beyond his control. He leaves the scene with Renee Walker while Cole supervises the wounded Samir's transfer to CTU. A Russian operative posing as an EMT has injected Samir with a lethal substance. He tells Novakovich that Renee may have recognized him from her earlier undercover assignment and follows her and Jack home.
Taylor prepares to abandon the peace summit, but Jamot proposes that Dalia Hassan succeed her husband. Dalia agrees to continue his work if her government supports her. Novakovich uses the uncertainty over her authority to announce Russia's withdrawal. Ethan Kanin suggests that Taylor hear Charles Logan's offer to bring the Russians back. Reluctantly, she appoints him as her emissary. At CTU, Hastings is removed and Chloe is given temporary command.
Jack and Renee become intimate at his apartment as Samir dies in CTU medical. Chloe orders an immediate toxicology check and calls Jack when it points to poisoning. Renee answers and remembers that the EMT may belong to the Russian mob she once infiltrated. Before she can explain it to Jack, the sniper shoots her through the window. Jack carries her downstairs and rushes her to hospital, but the doctors cannot save her. He is left with Chloe's account of Renee's suspicions and the news of her death.
