CTU sends Doyle's field teams to the Bloomfield copper facility, hoping to capture Cheng and recover the component. Jack asks Nadia to release him for the mission, arguing that his imprisonment gave him knowledge of Cheng, but she refuses. The raid finds abandoned weapons crates instead of the fugitives. Cheng's men are already traveling through the sewers toward CTU, using information that lets them cut communications and security systems.
Zhou leads an armed assault into the building and gathers the staff as hostages. Jack escapes his holding cell after a guard is killed. When Zhou asks who is in command, Milo steps forward before Nadia can answer. Zhou shoots him dead. Jack fights his way toward Marilyn and Josh. Discovering that the gunmen specifically want his nephew, he gets Josh into a ventilation duct before he and Marilyn are captured.
Zhou threatens to kill Marilyn unless Josh comes out, and the boy surrenders to save his mother. Cheng then calls Phillip Bauer, who supplied the access codes used against CTU and is repairing the nuclear circuit board. Phillip insists that he receive his grandson before returning it. In Washington, Lennox sends Lisa back to Bishop with false information suggesting the component has been destroyed. She carries a surveillance camera into the apartment, but the operation has not yet secured the deception's success.
