Saunders's men collect Chappelle's body from the train yard and warn Jack against following them. At CTU, the financial trail reveals Saunders's daughter Jane in Santa Barbara. Jack proposes replacing her with someone who looks like her so the agents can take Jane without immediately alerting her father. Kim is the closest available match and volunteers, despite Jack's objection to sending her into the field.
Jack accompanies Kim to the university library where Jane works. The team creates a reason for Jane to visit the restroom, sedates her and sends Kim out in her clothes. Jack questions Jane about contacting her father, but she refuses to help. A second man sees through the substitution and pulls Kim away at gunpoint. She fights him and shoots him as Jack reaches them, leaving the operation exposed.
Chase follows the search for William Cole, finding evidence of his illness at home. Cole goes to a pharmacy and then an emergency department, where a news report makes him realise he was exposed at the hotel. Staff isolate him, but CTU must trace people he encountered before treatment. Palmer faces criticism from his cabinet over Chappelle's killing. Saunders confirms the body's identity and demands a list of foreign nationals working covertly for the United States, threatening another release if Palmer refuses.
