Palmer tells Jack that Saunders has demanded Chappelle's death. Jack hopes the financial investigation can locate Saunders before the deadline, but he restricts Chappelle's access and eventually explains why. Chappelle does not know his pursuer and cannot understand the demand. He hands over the encrypted bank records so Chloe and Kim can continue the search while Jack prepares to take him to the train yard.
At the Chandler Plaza Hotel, Michelle offers suffering guests suicide capsules and learns that a man has slipped out after spending the night with a woman there. A fingerprint on the woman's belt gives CTU a way to identify him. The missing man, William Cole, returns home and develops a nosebleed, exposing another possible route for the infection beyond the sealed building. Michelle's team works to establish who he is and where he has gone.
Chloe and Kim decrypt the account and find an address linked to a recent transfer. Chase leads a raid while Jack and Chappelle travel by helicopter, listening for news that might spare Chappelle's life. The apartment contains telephone equipment relaying Saunders's calls, and Saunders is absent. At the yard, Chappelle asks to use Jack's gun himself, but cannot pull the trigger. With the deadline approaching and no successful rescue operation, Jack takes the weapon back and kills him.
