Secret Service officers detain Jack while Palmer and Sherry leave the breakfast. Jack tells Agent Simes that his family is being held hostage and that he was forced to carry the assassin's weapon through security. Simes refuses to release him. Jack escapes using steam from the plant machinery and commandeers Lauren Proctor's car. He takes her to a construction office to telephone CTU, then keeps her there at gunpoint while Nina arranges transport and supplies for him.
Nina and Tony question Jamey, who identifies Gaines and admits installing the surveillance links inside CTU. She says she took payment because she could not support her son on her salary, but insists on written immunity before saying more. Jack asks Nina to bring in the boy, and the interrogation turns toward what he will learn about his mother's actions. When Nina and Tony return to the room, they find Jamey bleeding beside a broken cup. Gaines calls her device as they try to help her.
At the compound, Eli threatens Kim, and Teri offers herself to protect her daughter. She returns with a stolen mobile phone and briefly reaches Nina before another guard interrupts. Sherry persuades Kingsley to delay the Keith story by offering an account of a government agent's apparent involvement in the assassination plot. Palmer suspects his wife arranged the delay. Lauren finally directs Secret Service officers toward Jack instead of helping him escape, but he climbs out through a back window and reaches the vehicle Nina sent.
