Jack leaves the unidentified body with Nina at CTU and takes a helicopter to the hospital. Janet survives the crisis in surgery, and Jack wants guards to keep her safe until she can answer questions. His interrogation of Alan annoys Teri, who has relied on the man's help throughout the search. Jack tells her about the threat against Palmer and explains why Kim's disappearance may be connected to his work. At the compound, Kim helps Rick bury Dan and urges him to escape with her.
Palmer learns that Carl helped conceal Keith's involvement in Gibson's death. Carl says Keith acted in self-defence and reveals that Sherry sent him for help. Palmer confronts his wife over keeping the truth from him. Sherry argues that disclosure could destroy both their son's future and his election campaign. Mike Novick advises Palmer to tell the public himself, before the network reports the story, and to seek his family's support for an announcement at the breakfast.
Gaines contacts Jack inside the hospital and threatens Kim unless he follows instructions. Jack walks away from Teri and accepts an earpiece through which Gaines directs him. Alone with Janet, the man posing as her father suffocates her after she asks where her real father is. He then lures Teri away with a supposed lead to Kim. Nina identifies the body through a surgical implant and calls Teri with the name: Alan York. Teri is sitting beside the man who has been using the dead man's identity.
