Jack follows Penticoff to a police station and pushes for access to him, despite the officers' anger over Jessie Hampton's death. Mason arrives to stop him, but Jack argues that the prisoner connects Walsh's investigation to the threat against Palmer. During their interview, Jack secretly gives Penticoff his telephone number. Penticoff then uses his permitted call to explain that the people holding Kim expect him at a San Fernando Road phone booth.

Jack stages a fight that lets him steal an officer's access card and pass it to Penticoff. They escape while Mason tracks them by satellite. Nina arranges a trace on the pay phone, but a separate mobile phone rings inside the booth instead. The caller directs Penticoff to dispose of a body in a nearby car. Jack finds a dead man in the trunk. When Mason catches up, Jack describes the suspected CTU betrayal, and Mason lets him take the body for identification.

At the hospital, Teri and Alan wait as doctors operate on Janet. Palmer meets Maureen Kingsley, who presents evidence that Keith sought treatment under another name after Gibson's death. His subsequent questions leave Keith angry and defensive. Gaines brings Kim to his compound, where Rick is relieved to see her alive. Dan admits he left Janet in the street rather than killing her, and Gaines shoots him. As Rick faces his new orders, Janet's heart monitor flatlines in the operating room.
