Build the Ship and the Outposts

On this page

Starfield gives you a ship to pilot, personalise and modify, and the store treats it as one of the main systems rather than as transport between quests.

The ship is yours to change

Four stages of Starfield's ship loop: pilot and command the ship, personalise it and modify weapons and shields, assign crew for bonuses, and build outposts and cargo links.
Raw materials feed research and crafting. Open the full image.

You pilot and command the ship of your dreams, personalise how it looks, and modify critical systems including weapons and shields. Because those systems are the parts you edit, the ship becomes a build decision in the same way that a weapon or an ability is.

Deep space has its own activity

In deep space you engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and can even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection. Assigning crew members for unique bonuses folds into the same loop, so the ship is staffed rather than simply flown.

Outposts, cargo and research

On the ground the systems continue: build outposts, hire a crew to passively extract materials, establish cargo links to transfer resources between them, then invest those raw materials into research projects that unlock unique crafting recipes. That chain is the economic half of the game, and it runs on what you gathered while exploring.

The character those crew bonuses apply to is covered in deciding who you will become. Where those raw materials come from is covered in exploring a thousand planets.
