Survive Early Fights With Dodge Rolls and Flask Recovery

On this page

Give yourself room to dodge before an early fight gets crowded. A useful first goal is to recognise one enemy windup, move out of its path and land a short attack while you have space. You can add damage once that rhythm feels comfortable.

Separate dodge from sprint

Open your input options and find your dodge and flask controls. The combined dodge input starts a sprint if you keep holding it after the roll. Getting hit while sprinting can knock you down, so use clear ground when you need to travel quickly. GGG movement changes

If you keep sprinting by accident, assign the dedicated dodge-only binding in input options. It starts unassigned and does not turn into sprint when held. Try both inputs away from enemies until you can tell which action you are using. GGG input options

Find a comfortable place for your Life and Mana flask controls too. If the descriptions are hard to read, enlarge popups in the UI section of Options before comparing them.

Watch the attack before committing

A dodge roll can interrupt your own skill animation when you need to move. It helps avoid certain attacks and projectiles, but large area attacks can still catch you. Move beyond the threatened area instead of relying on the roll to protect you wherever it ends.

Watch the enemy while attacking. When you see a windup, stop trying to squeeze in another hit and move toward open ground. Avoid aiming your escape into a corner or a second group of enemies. After the attack passes, look for an opening before attacking again.

For practice, choose one familiar enemy and concentrate on the move that usually catches you. Try a shorter attack sequence on your next attempt. Keep the same skill while you learn the timing; changing your whole setup at once makes the cause harder to recognise.

Three-part combat decision diagram: read the windup and leave marked danger, take a short attack opening, then check Life and flask charges while avoiding damage. Holding combined dodge starts sprint; dodge-only has a separate binding.

Check what your flask can actually recover

Your default flask slots hold one Life flask and one Mana flask. Each use spends charges, and a flask cannot activate without enough. Read its recovery amount and duration: ordinary Life flask recovery happens over time.

Use recovery while you still have room to react, and keep moving out of incoming damage while it works. Do not wait for a perfect escape if another hit is about to kill you. Monster kills replenish charges; use a town well to refill before setting out again. Checkpoints also refill flasks.

Fix the mistake that repeats

If you keep getting surrounded, leave the pack earlier. If a long skill animation catches you, shorten your attack window. If a flask will not activate, inspect its remaining charges before expecting another heal.

When movement feels comfortable but each hit still hurts, compare your equipment and resistances. If you cannot finish a short attack without exhausting your resources, inspect your skill gems and supports before adding another support. Change one thing, return to a familiar fight and see whether that specific problem improves.
