Follow the Road to Osaka
On this page
Nioh’s story runs through the Warring States period, and the store marks the end of that period with a specific pair of campaigns.
The age is the setting
The game is set in the age of samurai, and the traveller lands in Japan to fight through both its warriors and its Yokai. The historical frame is not decoration either: the expansions follow named generals and named campaigns, so the fiction and the history advance together rather than running in parallel.
The winter, then the summer
The Siege of Osaka appears twice, first as the winter campaign in Defiant Honor and then as the summer campaign in Bloodshed’s End. Structuring the last two expansions as two halves of one siege is a clear signal about how much of the ending depends on the history it is adapting.
The final chapter belongs to William
The store calls Bloodshed’s End the final chapter of William’s tale, which is the point where the traveller you have been controlling since he landed on the shore finally gets a name and an ending. The Warring States period drawing to a close is presented as the very same event.
What each expansion adds is covered in playing the three expansions. The fights along the way are covered in fighting the warriors and the Yokai.
