Hollow Knight: Silksong Beginner Guide: Moss Grotto to Bone Bottom

On this page

Start by learning Hornet’s space

Silksong opens in Moss Grotto, then points you through the Ruined Chapel toward Bone Bottom. Treat the first rooms as practice, not a race to the next door. Hornet has a fast, directional Needle and a diagonal downward strike, so a jump over an enemy can also become a way to stay above it. Get comfortable with the height and angle before trying to turn every opening into extra damage.

Use the bench you most recently rested at as your reset point. A death or quit returns Hornet there, so sit down when you find a new safe stop before pushing into a long unfamiliar room. If an enemy is costing too much health, leave a little space, watch one attack cycle, then re-enter on the opening. The early route rewards that patience more than a fast clear.

Spend Silk with a reason

Needle hits build Silk. Bind is the early recovery move: it takes a full spool and restores several Masks, but it is not instant. Start it after an enemy has committed to a long move, after you have created distance, or during a clean gap between threats. Do not try to heal because the meter is full; heal because the room has given you time.

That choice is the first combat habit worth keeping. A Silk Skill can finish a dangerous target or create breathing room. Bind can save a run. Against a new boss, keep enough Silk for the first safe heal you spot rather than firing every charge as soon as it appears.

Clear the Ruined Chapel without forcing it

Moss Mother waits in the Ruined Chapel and blocks access to Bone Bottom. Her first encounter is a compact lesson in jumping, watching the ceiling and healing only after an attack has ended. The Moss Mother guide breaks down that fight if the chapel is stopping your first run.

After the fight, reach Bone Bottom and make it your working hub. Speak to people you meet, check the routes around town, and spend a few minutes gathering before throwing all of your Rosaries into one purchase. Maps and reliable checkpoints make later exploration less wasteful than a panic buy.

Your next three priorities

  1. Find and rest at new benches before exploring side rooms far from Bone Bottom.
  2. Buy mapping help when you meet Shakra, then use a bench to record the ground you have actually covered.
  3. Follow the route into The Marrow when you are ready for the next major movement and travel unlock.

The Silk, Bind and combat guide explains the basic combat loop, while Maps, benches and Bellways covers the early purchases that stop Pharloom from becoming a maze.
