Choose the Strategic View
On this page
Inquisition gives you two ways to fight, and the store describes both without ranking them: plan from above, or barrel ahead with crossbows blazing.
The strategic view
The optional strategic view gives you a god’s-eye vantage on battle, and time stops while you plan in that view. Calling it optional is the important part of the description, because it means the tactical layer is available to you without being mandatory for every single encounter.
Or do not stop at all
If that is not your style, the store says you can just barrel ahead with crossbows blazing. That is the same fight approached as an action game, and the fact that both are presented as legitimate explains the store’s own line that there is no wrong way to play except the way that gets you killed.
Strategy is also a party decision
Inquisition is listed under strategy as well as action and role-playing, which fits a game where who you send into a battle is decided before the fighting starts. The tactical view and the party choices are two versions of the same idea, offered at different speeds.
The leadership decisions behind the party are covered in leading the Inquisition. The places you fight in are covered in exploring Thedas and its add-ons.
