Water Sleeps
Most of the Black Company's leadership is held in stasis beneath the glittering plain, and the survivors have been fighting a guerrilla war in Taglios with whatever they can find.
About
Water Sleeps is a fantasy novel by the American writer Glen Cook, published in 1999 and the eighth book of the Black Company series.
The company that opens the book is a shadow of the one that marched north in the earlier volumes: the senior officers are trapped in stasis under the glittering plain, and what remains of the unit has been living on its wits in Taglios, running a quiet war against the forces holding the city. The plan that drives the novel is to reach the plain and release the sleepers, and it has to be attempted while the company is still being hunted by Soulcatcher, a sorceress of considerable power, and while the goddess whose death is the subject of prophecy keeps interfering. Cook's series is written as the company's own chronicle, and the annalist of this volume is one of the people who has to hold the story together.
The book brings the second cycle of the series towards its climax, and the ninth volume, Soldiers Live, concludes it.
