Dreams of Steel
Lady is left for dead when the company is broken at the end of Shadow Games, and she begins the novel by digging herself out of a heap of the dead.
About
Dreams of Steel is a fantasy novel by the American writer Glen Cook, published in 1990 and the fifth book of the Black Company series.
The book picks up the two halves of the story after the company's defeat and the loss of most of its members. Lady, who was once the ruler of an empire and is now one of the company's officers, is left for dead on the field, and her account begins with her working her way out from under the bodies. She falls in with Narayan Singh, a leader in a religious movement with its own ideas about how the world should be arranged, and his companion, and the three of them set about putting together an army in a region that has been fought over for years. Lady's method of managing people is not the one Croaker used, and the novel is as much about what she is willing to do as about the campaign itself.
The series continues in the Books of Glittering Stone, and this book sits at the point where the southern story becomes its subject.
