The Desert Spear
The sun is going down on humanity and the night belongs to the demons, and the population that is left has to hide behind symbols of power it no longer entirely understands.
About
The Desert Spear is a fantasy novel by the American writer Peter V. Brett, released on 13 April 2010. It is the second book of the Demon Cycle series.
The world it returns to is one in which the demons come up as the sun sets and prey on a human population that has shrunk back into fortified places. The wards, the symbols that keep the demons out, are the only thing standing between the two sides.
The first volume appeared in 2009 and this one followed the year after. The book went straight into the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list at number thirty-five in April 2010, and it stayed in the top fifteen of the Times hardback fiction list from its release.
It follows on from the events of the first book, and after it the main characters are facing an army of demons rather than the isolated attacks of the earlier story. The third volume, The Daylight War, appeared in 2013, and the series runs to five books in all.
