The Core
For as long as anyone can remember, the demons have come up out of the ground at night and hunted human beings down to a few scattered settlements.
About
The Core is a fantasy novel by the American writer Peter V. Brett, published in 2017. It is the fifth and last book of the Demon Cycle series, which began in 2009.
The series is set in a world where demons rise from beneath the ground every night and take on form and substance, and where the human population has been reduced to fortified settlements that survive behind protective symbols. The settlements that have lasted are the ones that have kept those symbols in good repair.
The earlier volumes followed the people who learned to fight back rather than hide, and the story has been building towards the place the demons come from. This book is the one in which the reckoning with that place happens, and it brings one of the long fantasy sequences of the period to an end.
It brings to an end one of the long fantasy sequences of the period, and it follows the four earlier books in the series. The series runs to five books in all.
