Lover Arisen
Balthazar is possessed by a demon and has been given the job of finding the Book of Spells, which he is pursuing in the middle of a city where a homicide detective is trying to account for a series of mutilated bodies.
About
Lover Arisen is a paranormal romance by the American writer J. R. Ward, published in 2022. It is one of the later books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, in which a group of vampire warriors fights a long war in an American city while the human population remains unaware of them.
Balthazar is a thief, and he is not in sole possession of himself: a demon called Devina has attached herself to him and has her own interests in what he does. Those interests currently involve the recovery of an object called the Book of Spells, which several parties want and which would matter a great deal to the war if it fell into the wrong hands.
Erika Saunders is a homicide detective in Caldwell, and the cases on her desk do not add up to anything she can explain in a report. She is also sleeping badly, and the figure who appears in her dreams is both a suspect and the only person who seems to be able to help her. The two of them are drawn together while the arrangements around the book tighten, and the book's central question is what the attachment developing between them will cost the people who depend on Balthazar.
