Crown of Midnight
Celaena Sardothien has won the contest to become the king's champion and is now required to carry out his orders while privately working against him.
About
Crown of Midnight is a fantasy novel by the American writer Sarah J. Maas, published in 2013 and the second book of her Throne of Glass series. It follows the first volume, in which Celaena Sardothien won a competition and became the king's champion after a year of hard labour in the salt mines of Endovier.
The book stays close to Celaena as she carries the office she won: an assassin of eighteen, in private not loyal to the crown she serves. Only a handful of the people around her know how much she is concealing, and the work she is given threatens the few she has come to care about rather than the king's enemies. The subject headings recorded for this volume list assassins, kings and rulers, courts and courtiers, love and criminals.
The 2013 English edition came from Bloomsbury at 336 pages, with the ISBN 9781408834954, and the sequence continued afterwards in Heir of Fire and the volumes that follow it. The cast assembled in the first book returns here, and the action resumes from the competition that closed it.
