Fight From Cover in Turn-Based Combat
On this page
Combat in Rogue Trader is described as a fully-fledged isometric turn-based tactical system, adapted from the classic Rogue Trader ruleset.
Turn-based, seen from above
The isometric view and the turn-based structure are both stated plainly, which sets the expectation that fights are problems to solve with a party rather than tests of reflex. That is also why the abilities standing beside you matter more than anything you could do with quicker hands.
Cover, environment, positioning
The store names three tools for winning: take advantage of cover, use the environment, and rely on careful positioning to overpower your enemies. Because all three are positional rather than numeric, the map you are standing on is doing as much work as the characters who are standing on it.
When that is not enough
When cover and positioning are not enough, you use your companions’ powerful abilities to turn the tide of battle and achieve victory even in the direst of situations. The store adds that the adaptation of the classic ruleset allows an enormous number of possibilities to explore, which is the reason to keep a save rather than start over.
The captain leading that fight is covered in sailing the Koronus Expanse. The retinue that fights beside you is covered in gathering a retinue that changes.
