Balance Melee and Ranged

On this page

The official description is specific about the combat: Darktide is built on the legacy of Vermintide 2’s melee system and introduces intense Warhammer 40,000 gunplay to the mix, asking you to master the balance between ranged and melee.

Melee is the inherited half

Each half covers what the other cannot reach. Open the full image.

The melee system comes from Vermintide 2, which means it is designed for crowds that arrive faster than you can shoot. Treat it as your answer to anything inside arm’s reach, and expect to spend more of a mission in it than a shooter instinct suggests.

Ranged answers what melee cannot reach

The gunplay is described as new to this team’s formula, with lasguns and heavier weapons named. Its job is the threat your blade cannot close on: distant shooters, specials, and anything holding a corridor you need to cross.

The switch is the skill

Mastering the balance means knowing when to stop shooting and start swinging, usually before the enemy is on top of you. If you are being hit while still aiming, you switched too late.

Class decides the starting point

The store describes choosing a class to determine traits and skill sets, with a veteran, an outsider or a zealot offered as flavours. Whichever you pick, the two halves still apply: your class changes the mix, not the requirement.

Both halves work better with a team around you: read staying inside your team’s reach. Then prepare for the specific mission in rebuilding your loadout for conditions.
