Dolores asks Teddy to teach her to shoot, but she cannot make herself pull the trigger. Ford gives Teddy a new history involving Wyatt, a former soldier whose followers now terrorize the countryside. Teddy leaves with a hunting party, only to be overwhelmed by attackers who do not fall when he shoots them. At the ranch, Dolores again faces the murder of her family and an assault by Rebus. Memories of the Man in Black interrupt the familiar sequence. This time she draws a gun, shoots him and flees, eventually stumbling into the camp where William and Logan have stopped during a bounty hunt.
In a private conversation, Dolores reads from Alice in Wonderland and says she would choose freedom over safety. The man questioning her treats her thoughts as something worth exploring rather than simply correcting. Their discussion continues away from the other staff. When Bernard asks Ford about Arnold, Ford describes a former partner who wanted the hosts to develop consciousness and died before the park opened. His account leaves the circumstances uncertain. Meanwhile, Elsie and Stubbs track a missing woodcutter whose unusual carvings suggest knowledge outside his assigned role. They find him trapped in a ravine, but the rescue becomes dangerous when he grabs Elsie. Instead of attacking her further, he smashes his own head with a rock.
