Wednesday spends her summer using Goody's book to pursue the Kansas City Scalper. Finding him puts her in danger when a vision brings on black tears and leaves her unconscious, but Thing helps her escape and overpower the killer. Back at Nevermore, she is an unwilling celebrity after saving the school. New principal Barry Dort wants her to represent its revival, and Pugsley arrives as a student with growing electrical powers. Morticia is offered a role organising the fundraising gala. Meanwhile, the murder of private investigator Carl Bradbury draws Wednesday toward another case. Crows have killed him, and former sheriff Galpin says their shared investigation concerns the outcast community.
Someone is also continuing to watch Wednesday closely. The stalker steals her novel and uses clues to lead her beneath the Founders' Pyre, where she retrieves it shortly before the structure burns. Dort honours her publicly, but she rejects the admiration and sets fire to the commemorative painting. Enid is upset by her friend's hostility toward the people celebrating them. Elsewhere, Pugsley follows a school legend to the Skull Tree and accidentally revives a buried corpse with electricity. Wednesday's own abilities deliver a more immediate threat: touching Enid triggers a vision of her friend's grave. In that vision, Enid blames Wednesday for her death, giving the investigation a personal urgency.
