Wednesday's account of Rowan's death becomes difficult to defend when he walks back into Nevermore alive. Sheriff Galpin doubts her story, and Principal Weems announces that Rowan has been expelled. Wednesday sends Thing to follow him to the station, but he loses his target. Away from the hand's sight, Rowan changes into another man and then into Weems, exposing the principal's disguise to the audience. Wednesday remains determined to find physical proof of the attack. Returning to the woods with Tyler, she finds Rowan's glasses and experiences another vision connecting him to the attempt on her life and the mysterious illustrated book.
Nevermore's extracurricular activities put Wednesday in contact with more possible witnesses, including Rowan's roommate Xavier and Eugene, who runs the beekeeping club. Enid is occupied with the Poe Cup, a boat race that Bianca intends to win through sabotage. Wednesday joins Enid's team after overhearing Bianca's plans, helping turn the competition against its usual winner. Their victory gives Enid an unexpected ally, even as Wednesday keeps following her separate investigation. A symbol on the torn page points toward the Nightshades, a supposedly defunct student society. Solving the riddle at Edgar Allan Poe's statue opens a hidden entrance. Wednesday finds the book underground, only to be captured before she can leave.
