Oleg tells Ivar that he will gather an army and fleet to take Kattegat. Their proposed campaign soon becomes entangled with Oleg's own family. He visits his brother Askold, who has custody of the young heir Igor, and poisons him. Oleg takes control of the boy, drawing Ivar into a struggle over a throne that belongs to someone too young to rule for himself.
Another brother, Dir, confronts Oleg and demands that he release Igor. Oleg answers by revealing that he knows about Dir's secret marriage and has taken his new wife hostage. Dir backs down, leaving Oleg with the advantage. Ivar watches the exchange and begins making contact with Igor. Oleg's reputation as a prophet gives him a way to frighten his opponents, while his knowledge of their secrets helps him defeat them.
In Kattegat, Kjetill Flatnose returns from Iceland to recruit settlers. His account of Floki's disappearance leaves Bjorn suspicious, while Ubbe is interested in travelling west and finding the wanderer who has described another land. Bjorn also weighs Harald's request for help against Olaf. Despite objections and his awareness of Harald's ambitions, he decides to honour the debt he owes him. Hvitserk's condition makes him an unsuitable choice to govern during Bjorn's absence, so Ubbe and Torvi must postpone their journey and look after Kattegat.
