The armed meeting ends peacefully when both groups lower their weapons. Ubbe and Torvi are welcomed into the local community, where the visitors exchange gifts and practise using weapons with their hosts. Some familiar words suggest an earlier visitor has taught them Norse speech. Ubbe also notices carvings connected with Ragnar. The explanation arrives when their hosts lead them to a treehouse and Floki emerges alive.
In Wessex, Ivar arranges traps to injure Alfred’s soldiers and force others to stop and help them. Hidden Vikings then attack the rescuers. Alfred is wounded but refuses to withdraw, taking a vision of Christ as encouragement to continue fighting. The fog makes it increasingly difficult for Ivar to follow the battle he has planned. His expectation that Alfred’s concern for his men will weaken the Saxon army has brought the two forces into close combat.
Harald is separated from his companions and receives a fatal wound from a Saxon soldier. As he lies dying, he sees Halfdan and speaks with the brother he killed. The Saxon taunts him about dying alone and being forgotten, but Harald still manages to draw his dagger and kill the man. He dies in the woods while the wider battle continues without a settled outcome.
Erik’s attempt to have Ingrid killed also fails. The enslaved man he recruits approaches her, but she already knows who sent him. The woman involved in the plot kills Erik with a pitchfork, and the would-be assassin is hanged before the people of Kattegat. Ingrid remains in control, with the woman standing beside her. Her struggle with Erik has ended while Harald’s expedition is still fighting in England.
