Bjorn is carried back to Kattegat alive after the defeat, though his wound leaves him struggling to breathe. Gunnhild and Ingrid remain beside him as the town faces another Rus attack. Ingrid tells Gunnhild that Harald raped her. Gunnhild is furious, but their immediate task is to care for Bjorn and defend Kattegat. Erik doubts that their remaining soldiers can withstand the army approaching them.
Oleg holds Harald and Olaf prisoner and decides to spare Harald while condemning Olaf to death. He makes Igor set the fire that burns Olaf alive. Olaf prays as he dies, while Ivar comforts the distressed boy. Harald later escapes captivity. In Iceland, Ubbe continues planning the voyage west and lets the settlers decide whether to join him. His conversations with Othere also expose more of the violence behind the settlement's troubled past.
A Norwegian ruler tells Oleg that Bjorn is dead and offers his allegiance, only to be killed himself. Oleg spreads the report before his army reaches Kattegat. Bjorn then rides out alone in armour, still gravely wounded. Arrows strike him, but he remains upright long enough to raise his sword. Norwegian reinforcements answer his call and charge with Kattegat's defenders. Ivar orders a retreat as the Rus lose their nerve. Bjorn dies after rallying them, and Gunnhild recounts how his final stand brought Norway's rulers together.
