Ivar faces his brothers at Sigurd's funeral after killing him in anger. He expresses remorse, but the death leaves the family arguing over who should lead the army and what their father's revenge has achieved. Bjorn refuses to take command of their next campaign. He wants to return to the Mediterranean, leaving Ubbe, Hvitserk and Ivar to decide how they will hold their position in England.
Ivar proposes York as a base from which the army can continue its attacks. The brothers capture the town during a Christian festival, and their men kill worshippers and plunder the church. Ubbe holds a dying nun as the violence spreads around him. Their victory gives them a defended settlement, although Ivar's growing authority and the cruelty of the occupation leave little sign of agreement over how to use it.
Heahmund reaches the remains of Ecbert's court and learns that the king had already surrendered his crown before granting land to the invaders. The promised settlement therefore offers no protection against the new king's claim. Aethelwulf reunites with Judith and their sons in hiding, where Alfred is ill and experiences a vision. News of York draws the scattered Saxons toward another confrontation with Ragnar's sons, while Bjorn pursues his own voyage.
