Ragnar's followers drag their longships through the countryside to bypass the river defences. During the work, Harald and Halfdan raid a Frankish farm and brutalise its occupants. Lagertha suffers a miscarriage, and Ragnar and Bjorn comfort her after the loss. Ragnar struggles without Yidu's supply, although he still keeps some of the substance back as the expedition moves closer to another confrontation with his brother at Paris.
Erlendur renews his threat against Torvi's child and orders her to kill Bjorn with his crossbow. She takes the weapon but turns it on Erlendur instead, killing the man who has been using her son against her. Far away in Kattegat, Sigurd finds little Siggy dead in the water. He confronts Aslaug about the neglected child, but receives no comfort from her response or from Ivar's reaction to the death.
Ecbert's acquisition of Mercia breaks his partnership with Aelle, who objects to being excluded from the settlement. Alfred and Aethelwulf reach Rome, where the pope honours the boy. In Paris, Charles promotes Roland, provoking Gisla's concern for Rollo's position. The Vikings finally put their ships back into the river beyond the forts and see Paris ahead. Ragnar focuses on killing Rollo as the fleet prepares to renew the attack after its long journey across land.
