Bjorn returns from the Mediterranean as his brothers plan revenge for Ragnar's death. Their reunion does not settle the danger to Lagertha. Ivar and Ubbe corner her in the hall, still intent on avenging Aslaug, but Bjorn breaks in and stops them. Killing his mother would mean confronting him as well, forcing the brothers to put that conflict aside while they gather warriors for England.
Rollo leaves the returning fleet in Frankia and faces Gisla's anger over his absence. His offer of land and a place for the Vikings to settle fails to overcome Floki's distrust. In Kattegat, Floki turns his attention to Ivar, building him a chariot that allows him to travel and fight without depending on his legs. Ivar tests it as the preparations for the expedition continue.
Judith visits Aelle and urges him to take the threat from Ragnar's sons seriously. She also asks to see the pit where her father killed Ragnar. In Wessex, Ecbert teaches Alfred while Aethelwulf faces the prospect of another invasion. Kings and warriors assemble around the brothers in Kattegat, creating an army far larger than an ordinary raiding party. Ivar calls for war in Ragnar's name, but the force that has gathered still contains rival ambitions alongside its shared demand for revenge.
