Ecbert arranges a ship to carry Ivar home and allows Ragnar a final private conversation with his son. Ragnar tells Ivar that Aelle will kill him, but directs his revenge toward Ecbert. He urges Ivar to use his anger carefully and be ruthless. Before leaving Wessex, Ragnar gives Athelstan's cross to Alfred, returning the object to the dead priest's son.
Ragnar travels to Northumbria in a cage. A blind driver tells him that he can see him, bringing back the Seer's prediction about the day of his death. Ragnar imagines the Seer in the driver's place and challenges the power of his prophecies. Ecbert follows the prisoner in a priest's clothes, unable to leave Ragnar to face the end entirely alone.
Aelle tortures Ragnar and demands repentance, but his prisoner refuses to beg for mercy. Memories of his family and earlier life accompany the ordeal. Above a pit of snakes, Ragnar declares that he will enter Valhalla and hear of his sons' victories. Aelle drops him into the pit, where the snakes kill him as Ecbert watches. Ivar returns to Kattegat and learns that Lagertha has killed Aslaug. Across the water, a black-cloaked, one-eyed figure approaches by boat, while Ivar now faces the loss of both parents.
