Spoilers for this episode.
Ragnar returns to Kattegat and challenges anyone who wants his crown to kill him. Ubbe steps forward, but their confrontation ends in an embrace. His sons still resent the years he spent away, and the return does not restore his old authority. Bjorn has plans for the Mediterranean, while Ragnar wants to return to England and confront the destruction of the Wessex settlement.
Floki and Helga welcome Ragnar, although Floki intends to travel with Bjorn. Ragnar tells his old friend that he loves him before visiting Lagertha in Hedeby. She now shares her home with Astrid, and their conversation returns to the life Ragnar abandoned. He admits that he wishes he had never left their farm, but Lagertha will not join his English expedition.
Away from the settlement, Ragnar attempts to hang himself, only to survive when the rope breaks. Back in Kattegat, Ivar offers the connection his father has struggled to find elsewhere. Earlier, Ivar threatened Margrethe after being unable to have sex with her, then listened as she argued that greatness need not depend on that ability. Sitting beside Ragnar on the thrones, he speaks about growing up without him. Ragnar invites his youngest son to England, giving Ivar a place beside him on the journey.
