The Usurper

Spoilers for this episode.

Ragnar's fleet returns to Kattegat and learns that Siggy died saving Ubbe and Hvitserk. He questions why Aslaug was not watching their children, while Rollo responds to the loss by drinking and picking a fight. Bjorn confronts his uncle, and their argument turns into a beating in the mud. The men have brought news of Torstein's death home only to find another death waiting for them.

Lagertha discovers that Kalf has claimed her earldom during her absence and asks Ragnar to help her recover it. His response centres on the expedition he wants to make to Paris rather than on restoring her position. He considers Kalf useful as a partner in that raid, leaving Lagertha angry with a man she has repeatedly supported. Athelstan's knowledge of Paris feeds Ragnar's interest, while Floki grows more hostile toward the former monk.

In Wessex, the settlement that the Vikings fought to establish is destroyed. Aethelwulf leads the attack on its inhabitants, turning Ecbert's promised protection into a massacre. Ecbert then uses the violence to trap the nobles who supported it, presenting himself as outraged while sharing responsibility for the scheme. The episode ends with the English alliance exposed to the audience as a fraud, while Ragnar remains occupied with family conflict, Lagertha's lost title and his plans for France.
