Dispute Between Brothers

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Three days after Leland's death, Cooper visits Sarah before the funeral and tells her what happened during her husband's final moments. The gathering afterward brings the town together, but its familiar disputes continue around the grieving widow. Cooper prepares to leave and explains to Audrey why he cannot pursue her affection. The woman he once loved died while he was meant to protect her, and he will not repeat that failure. Truman gives him a Bookhouse Boys badge, recognising the friendship they have formed. Their farewell is interrupted by FBI investigator Roger Hardy and a Canadian officer, who suspend Cooper over his actions across the border.

The rescue of Audrey and the earlier operation against Jacques have left Cooper facing allegations involving stolen drugs and disrupted police work. Truman refuses to help prosecute the man he regards as an exceptional colleague. At One Eyed Jacks, the Canadian officer is revealed as part of Jean Renault's scheme and prepares to plant cocaine in Cooper's car. Norma discovers that the harsh food critic was her own mother and orders her away. Josie returns to Truman in distress, while Catherine explains how she survived the mill fire. Cooper goes night fishing with Major Briggs, who asks about the White Lodge. A sudden bright light interrupts their camp, and Briggs disappears into the woods.
