Rest in Pain

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

At breakfast, Audrey admits leaving Cooper a note about One Eyed Jacks and tells him that Laura and Ronette worked at her father's perfume counter. Truman arrives expecting the answer Cooper promised overnight, but Cooper can no longer remember Laura's whispered words. He treats the dream as a message that must be decoded. The funeral creates a more immediate dispute: Albert wants further time with Laura's body, and his contempt for the family's wishes provokes Truman into hitting him. His examination still yields useful clues, including bird wounds and a small piece of plastic bearing the letter J.

Laura's cousin Maddy arrives to stay with the Palmers, her resemblance to the dead girl unsettling the household. At the funeral, Bobby accuses the mourners of ignoring Laura's distress and fights with James. Leland throws himself onto the coffin as it lowers, turning the burial into a painful public collapse. Later, Truman introduces Cooper to the Bookhouse Boys, a local group watching the drug trade and the darkness they associate with the woods. They have detained Bernard Renault and suspect his brother Jacques. Shelly secretly arms herself against Leo, while Josie tells Truman that Catherine and Ben may be plotting against her. The town has buried Laura, but its arguments and private fears remain very much alive.
