Geralt remains in Brokilon, frustrated by injuries that prevent him from searching for Ciri. Milva stops him leaving before he can manage the journey. Yennefer and the surviving sorceresses investigate Vilgefortz's experiments while Tissaia struggles with the school's destruction and her lover's betrayal. Tissaia dies by suicide after leaving a letter. Yennefer visits Geralt, helps heal him and then returns to rally the mages against Vilgefortz. Their plans again carry them in different directions, both believing the princess may be heading into Nilfgaard's hands.
The girl presented to Emhyr is actually Teryn, still made to believe she is Ciri. The real princess is held in a tavern with another prisoner, Kayleigh. His companions, the Rats, attack the bounty hunters and free them. Ciri fights the man who captured her and kills him, crossing a boundary her training with Geralt had never made ordinary. When the outlaws ask her name, she introduces herself as Falka, taking the identity offered by the figure she encountered in the desert.
Geralt leaves with Jaskier, and Milva follows. At a Nilfgaardian checkpoint, he gives up Renfri's brooch to secure passage, then returns when a soldier abuses a family. He fights the guards despite his recent injuries, with Milva's arrows helping him survive. His message to the remaining soldier makes his opposition to Emhyr explicit. The search continues, while Ciri travels with new companions far from the court where her double has arrived.
