Geralt and Jaskier bring the girl rescued from Vuilpanne to Anika, hoping to undo the spell convincing her she is Ciri. The druid identifies sophisticated mind control and attempts a remedy. The girl's real name is Teryn, and she recalls being taken from Aretuza by someone she recognized. Geralt's questions push her back into the enchantment before she can name him. Her burst of magic also breaks the restraint on Anika's werewolf companion, forcing Geralt to subdue him while Jaskier helps contain Teryn.
Yennefer leaves the real Ciri with a banker's assistant while meeting Tissaia. Ciri quickly draws attention by exposing a supposed basilisk as a wyvern and fighting it in public. She loses her money and summons Yennefer, bringing her into contact with the sorceresses she distrusts. Yennefer proposes a conclave to bring the divided Brotherhood together against the approaching war. Ciri sees the compromises around Aretuza and questions whether entering the school will cost more than the training is worth.
Redania's rulers manipulate the aftermath of Queen Hedwig's murder, while Cahir obeys Emhyr's order to kill Gallatin and is visibly shaken by it. Ciri finally rides away from Yennefer, only to encounter the Wild Hunt. Geralt reaches her and drives the riders back. Their reunion leaves physical evidence of the encounter, ending any comfort that the pursuers were merely another vision.
