Tony remains in an induced coma after the shooting. Doctors tell Carmela and the children that he may die or suffer brain damage, and encourage them to speak to him. Carmela declares her love at his bedside, while Meadow reads poetry. AJ avoids the room, then finally visits alone and vows to kill Junior. He subsequently admits to Carmela that he has failed out of college, adding another worry to the hospital vigil.
At Eugene's wake, Silvio takes over as acting boss. The crew cuts Junior off, while Paulie, Christopher and Vito compete over opportunities to appear helpful to Tony's family. Junior remains confused in custody and denies shooting his nephew. Meanwhile, Tony experiences an unfamiliar California life during his coma: he is a salesman who discovers that his wallet and briefcase belong to someone named Kevin Finnerty. Without identification, he cannot enter his convention.
Tony uses Finnerty's name at another hotel, where Buddhist monks accuse him of installing a defective heating system. His denial leads to a scuffle. After falling on the stairs, he visits a doctor who tells him he has early Alzheimer's disease. This diagnosis belongs to the California experience rather than his hospital treatment in New Jersey. Back in the hotel room, he lifts the telephone but replaces it without dialing, watching a distant beacon flash outside.
