A.J.'s depression continues despite his family's efforts to talk to him. While alone at home, he attempts suicide in the swimming pool, but the rope attached to a concrete block leaves him struggling at the surface. Tony hears him after arriving home, jumps into the water and pulls him out. His initial anger gives way to holding and comforting his sobbing son. A.J. enters psychiatric care, where his parents hear him describe childhood resentments and Livia's bleak view of life. Tony and Carmela argue over responsibility for his condition. Tony also discusses the attempt with Dr. Melfi and blames his own family's history of mental illness.
Tony's conflict with Phil worsens when Phil refuses a compromise over asbestos disposal. Tony removes Coco and Butchie from another project's payroll, and they attack the foreman. Coco subsequently approaches Meadow in a restaurant, touches her face and makes sexual remarks. When Meadow tells Tony, he finds Coco and brutally beats him, also threatening Butchie. During A.J.'s appointment afterward, Tony notices one of Coco's teeth caught in his trouser cuff. Little Carmine offers to mediate, but Phil refuses to receive them and shouts insults from an upstairs window. Meadow tells her parents that she is dating Patrick Parisi and plans to study law. Meanwhile, Dr. Kupferberg raises doubts with Melfi about the value of treating criminal patients.
