He also reassures Christopher that he intends to rely on him more heavily, even as Christopher continues using heroin. A.J. discovers that his girlfriend Devin's family is far wealthier than his own, while she and her friends remain curious about his father's Mafia connections.
Artie borrows fifty thousand dollars from Tony to invest in a liquor deal proposed by his hostess's brother, Jean-Philippe. Ralph has refused the loan because Artie's friendship with Tony makes collection dangerous. When the investment fails, Artie confronts Jean-Philippe but is beaten and has his earring torn out. Despairing over the debt and humiliation, Artie takes an overdose and calls Tony, who summons emergency help. Tony later agrees to take over collection while wiping out his outstanding restaurant tab in exchange. Artie's suggestion that Tony anticipated profiting from his failure infuriates Tony, who insists he was helping a friend. Furio subsequently appears at Jean-Philippe's door to pursue the debt.
