The Flintstones

Season 6

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Fred and Barney’s familiar work and family schemes continue, now with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm old enough to be drawn into their parents’ plans. The season opens with Fred dreaming that the children sing in tune; a manager turns them into a sensation, and Wilma and Betty travel with them while Fred and Barney are left behind. The nightmare of a recording contract ends when he wakes, relieved that their childhood remains intact. A later visit from Samantha, a new neighbor with magic, also shapes one household adventure, as Wilma and Betty unknowingly benefit from her powers during a wilderness contest against their husbands. These episodes keep the show’s usual focus on short-lived schemes and domestic reversals.

A new recurring presence arrives in the seventh episode, when Fred and Barney encounter the Great Gazoo, a political exile from the planet Zetox assigned to serve the prehistoric men he calls “dumb-dumbs.” Gazoo can use his powers to intervene in their problems, though his appearances sit alongside rather than replace the Flintstones’ and Rubbles’ ordinary Bedrock life. The remaining stories send the couples through courtroom nerves, circus work, lodge parties, trips, quarrels and Fred’s repeated attempts to make money or impress others. The closing episode turns to Grandpa Flintstone’s wartime diary. While awaiting his visit, Fred reads about his grandfather leading Rocky’s Raiders in Stone World War I, with the familiar Bedrock characters appearing as figures in the remembered adventure.
